Why should you consider a custom barrel for your blaser?
Blaser make high quality barrels, but they have significant drawbacks. We have the technology to solve all the problems with Blaser barrels now:
- Their pricing is uneconomic. Blaser barrels are running some $3k for a standard profile, standard calibre now. Probably save yourself a grand by getting a custom barrel. Not to mention when you wear it out and have to replace it...
- Blaser have surcharges for everything. Heaven forbid you want fluting, or a muzzle thread, or shortened length, or thicker profile or certain calibres... that $3k will become $5k easily.
- The twist rates are too loose. Modern high BC bullets require tighter twist rates than what Blaser offer. All Blaser barrels, even the heavy match barrels in typical match calibres only have twist rates suitable for light hunting bullets. This is unsuitable for modern hunting and target sports.
- Blaser simply stopped making R93 barrels. What a shame, not to worry, let's make our own!
- Blaser barrels use a steel which is fine for sitting in a tree-stand drinking schnapps. But in the real, hard hunting that we do, it will not maintain its appearance despite constant care. It has been superseded by modern high quality stainless steel, carbon/epoxy options and Cerakote-style surface treatments.
